Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization –

Submitting to local directories is a great way to get traffic to your site which in turn helps to boost your search engine ranking. Local search directories such as YAHOO! , Google and Bing dominate the search engine world! they are a sure bet to have your business listed at the top. They are also geared toward giving the searcher precisely what they are looking for on any given subject. These 3 major search engines already have businesses listed whether the owner knows it or not.  This information is pulled from sources such as the online Yellow Pages.  All a business owner has to do is to look up their company, log in and click on their local listing and then add a link to their web page. Doing things like this will ensure that when a customer looks for your company that they not only get your local business information such as phone number and address, but that they can also visit your website. After all, it’s a free listing and it’s already there, so if your website is not linked to your local listing, then your competitors might just be getting the business.

Meta Tags are used in Search Engine Optimization – The use of Meta Tags such as “title tags”, “description tags” and “keyword tags” are a important part of SEO. It is important to designate pages for certain topics, products or services so you can use specific relevant keywords for each page. Search engines only allow a certain number of keywords per page, between 8 and 13….the rest are useless.  There are many free tools out there that will help you in finding relevant and targeted keywords. There are also many free tools out there that will compare the relevancy of your keywords to the content you have in your website.

The content needs to be relevant, relevant to what the visitor is looking for. Nothing is more frustrating to a visitor then not finding what they were searching for or having to read huge amounts of text to find it. Keep it short, simple, factual, relevant. This doesn’t mean to make a short post that has little or no value to the reader. Likewise an in depth posts can drag on and on repeating the same information over and over. People like convenience, so take the time to make your content convenient and relevant. Add only the  necessary details and cut out all the repetitive or non relevant content. Quality, relative content is important in Search Engine Optimization. Relevant content helps the spiders to crawl and rank your site.

Black hat techniques such as keyword stuffing are frowned upon by the major search engines and are a good way to get your site banned from the listings.

YAHOO! , Google and Bing! are the most important search engines to submit your site to. These search engines “crawl” for new sites all of the time, but you can help them find you by submitting your site personally  instead of waiting for them to find you. Submitting your site to the search engines is an all to often overlooked part of SEO.

Link Exchange is an important part of SEO as well. In the eyes of the Search Engines, the more sites you’re linked to the more important your website must be! This doesn’t mean that you should begin putting other business URL’s on your website (that would only help the other business), what you need is for the other businesses to put YOUR url link on THEIR website. One way to accomplish this is through link exchanges…….”you put my link on your website and I’ll put yours on mine”. Doing this helps the both of you.

Sincerely,
